About Tri-force jiu-jitsu academy
Tri-force is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy founded in 2004 by Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa, a leading figure in the Japanese jiu-jitsu community.
The name “Tri-force” combines “tri,” derived from “triangle,” with “force,” meaning inner strength. The three vertices of the triangle represent spirit, technique, and physical strength—the three essential elements of martial arts training. The name also evokes the word “try,” reflecting the importance of taking on challenges.
Tri-force is a place where people cultivate the strength and courage to challenge themselves through jiu-jitsu. Living by this philosophy is an ongoing challenge shared by everyone in our community.
Tri-force has a network of academies throughout Japan and overseas. It is officially registered with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), enabling its athletes to compete in IBJJF-sanctioned tournaments worldwide.
In competition, Tri-force has produced world champions and numerous all Japan champions. It has also won the overall academy title at the All-Japan Championship on several occasions. Since the Japan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (JBJJF) introduced its academy rankings in 2018, Tri-force has consistently held the No. 1 position and is recognized as Japan’s leading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy.
Biography of Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa
Founder and president of Tri-force
Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1996 as part of the first generation of BJJ practitioners in Japan. He took up the art at the age of 20 despite having no previous experience in martial arts, fitness training, or competitive sports. His natural aptitude soon became apparent, and he quickly established himself as one of Japan’s leading competitors. His highly versatile fighting style earned him the nickname “The Toy Box of Techniques,” reflecting his ability to draw upon a seemingly endless variety of techniques at will.
From 2000 onward, Hayakawa increasingly focused on international competition and achieved strong results at numerous tournaments. During this period, he joined the prestigious Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team and spent an extended period training with them. In 2002, he entered and won the Rio de Janeiro State Cup in Brazil. Following this victory, he was awarded his black belt by Master Alexandre Paiva, becoming the first Japanese practitioner to receive a black belt from Alliance.
Later that year, Hayakawa entered the All Japan Open as a black belt and faced Yuki Nakai, who had already achieved legendary status within Japanese martial arts through his historic bout with Rickson Gracie. By defeating Nakai, Hayakawa cemented his reputation as Japan’s premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor. In 2004, he founded Tri-Force Jiu-Jitsu Academy while continuing to compete at the highest level, finishing among the top eight competitors in his black belt division at that year’s IBJJF World Championship.
Beyond his accomplishments as a competitor, Hayakawa has earned widespread recognition as a coach, educator, and leader in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. He has trained numerous athletes who compete at the highest level and has conducted seminars around the world. He is also an accomplished practitioner and instructor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu self-defense and is one of the few professors in Japan capable of teaching its complete system.
Beginning in 2007, Hayakawa served as both executive and referee director of the Japan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (JBJJF), playing a central role in establishing the organizational foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Japan. He also served as the head of the federation’s refereeing department. Today, he focuses primarily on expanding the Tri-Force Jiu-Jitsu network and developing the next generation of athletes.

Visitor training
Training as a visitor is always welcome in our academy. We have Gi and No-gi wear for rent. Please send the form and pay your training fee via PayPal by the contact form below and show the receipt at the door. You can also pay at the academy.
Trial lesson
Interested people may join a trial lesson at Tri-force. Trial fee is 1,000 yen include rental gi (the jiu-jitsu uniform) and towel. We have change rooms and shower facilities. This service is limited to the residents in Japan. Please make sure to bring your residence ID.
